Current is at the forefront of the global media revolution and Current Canada is our next step forward.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. and Current Media plan to launch Current Canada as a cross-platform channel with TV and Web programming partly produced by young Canadians, the companies announced Monday.
Current Canada will operate as both a Web site and a digital cable channel should the CBC be successful with a current license application before the country's TV regulator.
Like earlier versions of Current TV in the U.S., Britain and Italy, viewer-generated programming packaged by the interactive channel will account for about a third of the Canadian channel's content.
Current Canada also will include bite-size "pods" that CBC executives hope will reshape how Canadian TV is consumed by the Internet generation.
"Current is at the forefront of the global media revolution and Current Canada is our next step forward," Current chairman Gore said in a statement.
