Back up in second place from third was the Oscar-tipped "Slumdog Millionaire" which swapped places with last week's No. 2, "He's Just Not That Into You," with Jennifer Aniston and Ben Affleck.
Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett were down at four after briefly topping the chart with another Oscar contender, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."
More hounds at five with Emma Roberts and Jake T. Austin setting up an inner city pet shelter in "Hotel for Dogs," while another newcomer, blood-soaked horror flick "Friday the 13th," opened in sixth spot.
"Notorious," the biopic of rapper Biggie Smalls, made its debut at seven, one above the week's fourth Top 10 newcomer "Pink Panther 2" with Steve Martin as the bungling Inspector Clouseau.
Director Woody Allen's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," with Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall being courted in Spain, was up at nine from 11 while horror movie "My Bloody Valentine" was down four places at 10.
