During a performance that was broadcast live, the controversial singer sang “Deutschland, Deutschland ueber alles”.
Pete Doherty has sparked a scandal during his Munich concert after he sang the Nazi anthem, “Deutschland, Deutschland ueber alles”. To make the problem even bigger, the entire event was broadcast live on Bayerischer Rundfunk Radio.
A spokesman for 30-year-old singer said said that Doherty was unaware that this was a Nazi anthem and said that Doherty apologizes to anyone who was hurt or insulted by his performance.
The first verse of this song has been ignored since the fall of the Third Reich, but this obviously did not mean much to the controversial singer. In today's official version, the German anthem uses only the third stanza of the song, which begins with “Unity, justice and freedom for the German fatherland”.
Booed off stage
Radio stopped live broadcast at the very beginning of the song which, at the time of World War II, was used for propaganda purposes and which highlights the racial superiority of the German nation over others. Hymn was set to music by Joseph Haydn, who dreamed of uniting all Germans in one state, but did not support the notion that Germans were a superior race.
Doherty, who is obviously not a big history buff, sang the controversial stanza inside the improvised version of the song ‘Hit The Road Jack’. He played another five songs, after which he was booed off stage, Dnevnik.hr reports.
