Tina Fey Caps Stellar Year With SAG Nominations

Actress Tina Fey capped a stellar year on Thursday when her television comedy "30 Rock" shared top billing at the Screen Actors Guild nominations, earning nods for best actress and the coveted best ensemble comedy cast.

Law drama "Boston Legal", cable channel HBO's miniseries "John Adams", critically-acclaimed 1960s drama "Mad Men" on AMC and police drama "The Closer" starring Kyra Sedgwick on TNT, also got three nominations apiece.

Fey, 38, already an Emmy-ward winner and 2008 Golden Globe nominee, saw her fame rocket ever higher this year with her dead-on impersonations of Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin on comedy show "Saturday Night Live."

The late night sketch program, however, failed to get a nomination from the Screen Actors Guild, which will hand out its awards in Los Angeles on Jan. 25.

Fey will compete against popular America Ferrera in "Ugly Betty", Christina Applegate, who plays an amnesiac in ABC's "Samantha Who?", cable channel Showtime's Mary Louise-Parker in "Weeds" and comedian Tracey Ullman for her "State of the Union" sketch series.

Legal and police shows dominated the TV drama nominees, with "Dexter", and "Boston Legal" and "The Closer" all picking up nods for best ensemble cast, and best actor for Michael C. Hall, William Shatner and James Spader respectively.

Medical drama "House" picked up its first best ensemble cast mention and a best actor nomination for Hugh Laurie's acerbic doctor Gregory House. "Mad Men", the Emmy-award winning drama set in the world of advertising, won nods for best ensemble cast and best actor and actress for Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss.

Moss squares off in the SAG best drama actress slot against Sedgwick, Mariska Hargitay in "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit", Sally Field ("Brothers & Sisters") and Holly Hunter ("Saving Grace").

In line with recent years, premium cable channel HBO led the nominations by network with nine, thanks mostly to mini-series "John Adams" about the second U.S. president, 2000 U.S. presidential campaign drama "Recount" and Hollywood industry comedy "Entourage".

But NBC came a close second with eight nods, thanks to comedies "The Office" and "30 Rock". Perennial favorite "Desperate Housewives" (ABC), "Weeds" (Showtime) and "Entourage" filled out the best ensemble cast comedy nominations.

Actor David Duchovny, whose life imitated art when he sought treatment for sex addiction earlier this year, was nominated best comedy actor for his role as a sex-obsessed writer in "Californication", with Tony Shalhoub rounding off the comedy actor list for his obsessive-complusive detective in "Monk".
