The auction of private items owned by Mahatma Gandhi took place despite protests in India, the BBC reported.
The organiser of the auction, James Otis, sold the legendary Gandhi’s glasses, a pocket watch, leather sandals, the bowl and plate he used.
The items were bought by an Indian businessman for 1.8 million US dollars. His plan is to return Gandhi’s private items back to India. He was in fact, bidding on behalf of his country.
James Otis, who considers himself a peace activist, claims he decided to sell Gandhi’s items to promote pacifism in the world. Still, his idea stirred up the public in India. One of the local ministers called the auction a disgusting commercialisation.
Mahatma Gandhi entered history books by leading the movement against the British rule.
