Japan's Crown Prince Naruhito will undergo endoscopic surgery for a benign intestinal polyp.
The polyp was discovered when Naruhito, who turned 47 last month, underwent a routine medical examination.
"I haven't heard that he had any symptoms, and no date has been set for the surgery, so I didn't get the feeling that there's any sense of emergency," the official added.
Naruhito's grandfather, Emperor Hirohito, died of intestinal cancer in 1989, and his father, the current Emperor Akihito, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2002.
