ARCHITECTURE UPSIDE DOWN

With his upside-down house, Polish artist Daniel Czapiewski showed the state of affairs in Poland in the Communist years and now.
Polish artist Daniel Czapiewski has built an upside-down house at the centre for education and regional promotion in the village Szymbark in Poland.
Even though at first sight it seems to be a silly artistic and particularly futile architectural attempt, Czapiewski tried to show the state of affairs in his homeland with his upside-down home.
The house that rests on its own roof represents the times of the Communist era as well as the times we live in today.
With what was in fact a rather simple idea if we leave aside architectural conditions, Czapiewski vividly presented the change of values that has pervaded the countries of the former Eastern bloc since the start of the transition process.
Indeed, many citizens of Poland and other transitional countries, including Croatia, felt as if the entire world had turned upside down after the fall of the Communist regime and the establishment of democratically elected government.
The work, however, is not saying that everything is all right now because, even though it was built more than 15 years after the demise of the iron curtain, the house symbolizes the change of values that will take a long time to adjust to.
At any rate, artist or not, Daniel Czapiewski is one of the few people who really built a house - from the roof up!
