RELIGIOUS PROHIBITION
MARCH 16 2007 16:18h
Text
One of the contestants is hiding from her family who is threatening her life because she took part in the pageant.
It is rare that pageants pass without a scandal, so this one is no exception. Several men, including her uncles, wanted to kill one of the contesters in the Miss Israel pageant, Angelina Fares, from the Druza region, because she took part in the pageant. She changed her name from Doaa because of the pageant and is now hiding in her home afraid to even pick up the telephone. A police investigation is underway.
Fares is the first woman from the Durza region that went to compete in the contest. People in that region are very religious and do not accept such conduct.
At the contest, the group Teapacks played their song “Push the Button”, which is the Israeli candidate for the Eurovision song contest.
The winner of the pageant is 18-year-old Liron Cohaner. She was crowned by last year’s winner, Yael Nizri. She will soon be recruited into the army, but hopes to become a doctor or veterinarian.
Look at the photos from the pageant in the PHOTOGALLERY. The Miss World contest will be held in October in Moscow for the 57th time.
