Grammy day was supposed to be an upbeat affair for the best and the brightest in the music world. R&B's reigning couple, Chris Brown and Rihanna were each up for several awards, but things went terribly amiss. Los Angeles police have confirmed that 19 year old Brown is being investigated for felony domestic battery.
Police are declining to identify the alleged victim but gossip website TMZ.com is claiming that the victim is Brown's girlfriend and R&B star, Rihanna. The incident occurred late Saturday in Los Angeles, where Brown allegedly got into an argument, visibly injuring the woman he was with. TMZ is also claiming that allegations against Brown include assault with a deadly weapon. Both Rihanna and Chris Brown canceled their scheduled performances at the Grammy Awards.
Former Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant received a "whole lotta love" at the Grammy Awards Sunday, winning five prizes including album of the year for an acclaimed collaboration with bluegrass queen Alison Krauss.
Other winners included rock band Coldplay, who won three awards, including song of the year; 20-year-old rookie Adele, who won a pair including best new artist; and Welsh newcomer Duffy, who was honored for pop vocal album.
Rapper Lil Wayne, who led the field with eight nominations, ended up with four prizes, including best rap album for "Tha Carter III," the biggest-selling U.S. release of 2008.
"Slumdog Millionaire" enjoyed a stunning night at the BAFTA Awards in London, winning seven prizes including best film. Kate Winslet won best actress for "The Reader" - effectively beating herself, as she was also up for "Revolutionary Road".
The late Heath Ledger was named best supporting actor for playing The Joker in the Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight" and "The Wrestler" star Mickey Rourke took home the best actor trophy.
