LONDON (AFP) – Soul legend Chaka Khan, pop singer Lady GaGa and actress Whoopi Goldberg were among stars to entertain Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Monday at Britain's annual Royal Variety Performance.
American teen star Miley Cyrus also performed for the monarch, gyrating in leather hotpants on stage while singing her hit "Party In The USA" in the resort town of Blackpool in northwest England.
Wearing a red PVC outfit and playing a piano suspended on giant stilts, Lady GaGa put in a relatively conservative performance, perhaps toning down her normally controversial style for the monarch, at Blackpool's Opera House.
"Let me hear you rattle your jewellery"
"Good evening Blackpool. Let me hear you rattle your jewellery," she said.
Some 1,000 people gathered outside the theatre for a glimpse of the queen and Duke of Edinburgh as they arrived for the gala evening, held for charity.
Veteran comedian Frank Carson greeted the couple inside, and attempted to give Prince Philip a pair of cufflinks bearing the English flag.
Britain's Got Talent winners join the veterans
"I tried to give him the cufflinks as a bit of a joke, but he handed them back. There was a note in the box saying 'Stolen by Frank Carson'," he said.
"I think he saw the funny side."
Dance troupe Diversity, who won the right to perform as winners of the "Britain's Got Talent" TV show, wowed the crowd with a frenetic routine.
The Royal Variety Performance is staged in aid of the Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund of which Queen Elizabeth is patron.
