KRAPINA, CROATIA - The Krapina-Zagorje county have increased their reward for finding the European Roller bird, which rose from 10 thousand kuna to twenty thousand kuna.
The public institution for managing protected natural values is continuing its project of monitoring the state of endangered species of birds.
The European Roller lives in Europe, Asia and some parts of Africa. The bird migrates when it gets cold, and goes to Africa where it spends the winter. Mating starts around spring or summer, and the female lays up to six eggs in a hollow part of a tree, where she keeps them warm for a few weeks. They mainly eat insects, lizards and frogs.
Everyone who wants to join the project will be given a brochure issued by the institution, in cooperation with the Croatian ornithology society, which will help people recognize the bird.
The European Roller (Latin: Coracias garrulous) is around 29-32 centimetres tall, and has a wingspan of around 52-58 centimetres.
The bird has a blue stomach and head. Its wings can be dark blue, brown or black. The bird has large eyes and a strong long beak. Its legs are small and thin, with small claws. It sounds similar to a crow.
