The battle for 143 mil HRK is going to start soon. The Zagreb Sport Union will get a new president after a long campaign. There was no mercy and all the means were being used to get the final result.
The competition included Tomislav Grahovac, Branimir Basic and Dragutin Surbek. They all competed to become a leader of Zagreb sports. The Zagreb Sport Union gets more than 140 mil HRK from the city budget, so it is understandable that every team fights for its place. Grahovac is a lawyer from handball community. He is the candidate of big teams – Dinamo, Cibona and handball club Zagreb. His presentation was watched by Zdravko Mamic, Zoran Gobac and Ivica Lovric, the head of city office for sport. However, Grahovac says he is no one’s marionette.
“I have never thought with other people’s heads, but only with my head. Those who know me well can confirm that no one can influence me because I am not of the kind” Grahovac said. If he becomes the president of Zagreb Sport Union, he doesn’t intend to make a difference between so-called large and small sports, but successful and unsuccessful sports.
“I think the solution is not to take from some to give to others but the aim is to earn more and then to divide it according to fair criteria. And when we talk about sports, the criteria are the sport results. Unfortunately, there is not enough money, but we have to do everything and to make the majority of users happy and satisfied”, Grahovac says.
Branimir Basic comes from the world of rowing and represents so- called small sports. The rumors say that he has been supported by the city SDP. This is also one of the ways to confront the Mayor Bandic who supports Grahovac. If Basic becomes a president, he claims that he will introduce clear criteria for getting money from the city.
“All those who work in the field can recognize honesty. There is a true wish to improve the situation and to set the criteria for getting the money”, said Basic.
He has been supported by many well-known sports people like Goran Ivanisevic, Velimir Zajec and Mirko Basic. The great advantage is also a person who is his vice-president candidate. It’s Tomislav Karlo, the leading figure of Croatian swimming federation.
The last candidate, the legend of table tennis Dragutin Surbek is the outsider of the election, according to all forecasts. He has allegedly promised to support Grahovac in the second round, but he didn’t want to confirm the information for the media.
101 delegates are coming to the meeting in Almeria center tomorrow. They will vote for a new president of Zagreb Sports Union. According to all announcements, this will be a very exciting and tense assembly. (Mediaservis)
