ZAGREB, CROATIA – Austria and Greece want Croatia to enter the European Union as soon as possible. This is the message that came from the meeting between Greek President Karolos Papoulias and the Austrian hosts, held on Thursday in Vienna.

Austria and Greece want to accept Croatia soon and send a “positive signal” to the countries of the region, said the foreign policy adviser of Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer, Bernd Wrabetz, on Thursday after a meeting between the two politicians.

Papoulias is on an official visit to Austria.

One of the issues of the meeting of the Greek president and his colleague Heinz Fischer and Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer was the stability of the western Balkan. Papoulias is in favour of strengthening Serbia’s European perspectives, as for Macedonia, Greece will set certain conditions, Austrian APA reports.

The main reason for this opposition to Macedonia’s progress in the European Integration process, the Greek president mentioned the almost hostile conduct of Macedonia in the conflict over the official name of the latter.
