TREATMENT CONSEQUENCES

The consequences of chemical castration are lack of libido and decreased hairiness. However, experts say it works.
CROATIA - Initiative of the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) to draft a law on the chemical castration of paedophiles and rapists has shocked Croatian politicians. Party president Anto Djapic plans to submit a law into Parliamentary procedure, which would castrate sexual offenders who repeat their crimes.
This law was recently announced by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and there was talk of a similar punishment for paedophiles and rapists in France. In both cases, the proposal was largely approved by the public.
However, what do experts say? Urologist Josip Galic of the Osijek Clinical Hospital did not wish to
express his views on the castration, but he did explain what chemical castration actually means.
A drug called LH-RH agonist is in question, which binds itself to the pituitary gland, thus preventing secretion of male sexual hormone testosterone.
- The LH-RH agonist treatment affects the cells which create testosterone. This reaction takes place through the hypothalamus-pituitary gland-testicle link. In the first month of effect, the secretion is initially increased, which exhausts the pituitary gland, and then the secretion is fully stopped – Galic said. However, the urologist continued that this therapy must be performed with a doctor present.
Galic pointed out that chemical castration was more efficient than the process of removing testicles. Namely, removing the testicles does not necessarily mean the loss of erection because apart from the testicles, male sexual hormones are also produced by the adrenal gland.
The LH-RH agonist also affects the adrenal gland – Galic explained.
Consequences caused by chemical castration are impotence, lack of libido, as well as decreased hairiness which is typical for men. The absence of testosterone secretion stimulates additional secretion of female hormone estrogen, which would gradually turn sex offenders into women, it seems.
The urologist concludes that he doubts the draft would be adopted by the Parliament. From European experience and the way the Croatian public thinks, this draft will surely be severely criticised.
