None of the incineratories have a Ministry of Environmental Protection permit for drugs incineration. MUP storages swamped with drugs.
The only possible choice for drugs incineration is the Sisak Herbos incineratory of hazardous waste and the Ministry of the Interior (MUP) started negotiations for issuing out an attest to this incineratory.
-As there are no similar incineratories in Croatia, Herbos is the only possible choice- said Ivan Smolcic of the Energetics and Incineratory Sector of Herbos.
In Herbos they have been destroying old medicine and medical waste from Sisak clinics and hospitals for years.
Puto destroyed
-Technically speaking, Herbos has everything necessary for environmental protection- said Mijo Ivankovic, Herbos Management president, adding they own a very expensive device for measurement of flue gases emission.
Zagreb incineratory Puto has the permit until August 1, 2002, but after it was destroyed in a fire, there was no destruction of confiscated drugs.
As the Jutarnji list daily reports, more than a ton of drugs has been prepared for destruction, which should be done under a special committee.
