IVO JOSIPOVIC:

Constitutional or Not, Crisis Tax is Bad

Text

I could not comment if the crisis tax is constitutional or not, the biggest problem of the law is social sensitivity, said Josipovic.

ZAGREB, CROATIA - Like president Stjepan Mesic, who has recently been seeking queries into the constitutionality of laws that the ruling coalition make headed by HDZ (Croatian Democratic Union), Ivo Josipovic has already sent a proposal to the Constitutional Court. If he inherits the position, and if necessary, he will continue that practice.

“I could not comment if the ‘crisis tax’ is constitutional or not, the biggest problem with that law is social insensitivity, that is a burden on poorer citizens” “Let the Constitutional Court query that” said Josipovic.

“The crisis tax deserves condemnation regardless of whether it is constitutional or not” he added.

Even though he will seriously start his presidential campaign in autumn, Josipovic has already started to head around Croatia. During the last day in July, Josipovic went to Istria where he met the mayor of the Istria County, Ivan Jakovcic (IDS – Istrian Democratic Parliament). Last week he was in Vukovar, visiting his colleague Zeljko Saba.

“In the pre-election campaign I will visit all counties, but I would not prognose where I will gain the greatest support. I expect support in all of Croatia” said Josipovic.

When asked if Josipovic spoke to Jakovcic about a joint candidate for president, Josipovic said that he considers IDS to be a respectable party, but that they did not mention the topic.

“We did not speak about choosing a joint candidate for the presidential elections. I an convinced that the left wing, meaning SDP (Social Democratic Party), IDS and HNS (Croatian People’s Party), will find a way to choose a candidate for president, but it is too early to speak about that” said Josipovic.

Besides Josipovic, other people to announced their candidature for the Croatian presidential elections are Vesna Pusic from HNS and Damir Kajin from IDS. However, in order to stop their votes from being spread out too thinly, there is a possibility that the parliamentary opposition will support a joint presidential candidate.
