Although he has enough of his own problems, Ivo Sanader has to chuckle to himself when thinking about Jadranka Kosor during these postelection days. One time, while he was still powerful (despite the affairs that had just started to come out), first he said to her – the dogs bark, but the caravan goes on. As he later said to her: ‘’He who digs a hole for another may fall in himself!’’ Only this time he fell into the hole while she was holding the shovel.
He has temporarily returned home from his hole. And her hole is becoming deeper and deeper each day since it has been discovered how the president prepares for winning her own presidential mandate. First, her sponsor Vladimir Seks acted like a fortune-teller about winning the election even without the opponent and then her friend Djurdjuca Sumrak asked the Zagreb HDZ to show the support and loyalty to their president by giving their vote to her. Seks caused the rush of the critics as the presidential friend Sumrak caused the ironical laughs. In his Big Brother life in front of the cameras, Sanader eventually can be satisfied with the ironic drama of the whole situation and he can conclude: ‘’I appointed her as I have destroyed her…’’
Thanks to the fact that Jadranka Kosor has created the atmosphere and legal frame in which Mladen Bajic had to start investigating corruption, hundreds of affairs have been discovered and very soon public became to realize the thievery that was going on under Sanader’s reign. The combination of the lack of will and determination that would make Croatian economy to grow stronger, the recognition about huge criminal activity and deep disrespect related to the HDZ leaders, cost Jadranka Kosor to lose the election. But she wants a new chance.
But this time she wants her own chance, and that is not a chance given by somebody else. She doesn’t want to be a forced president but an elected one. During the election eve she has already made a presumption she is leaving in order to come back. However, the way she wants to gain and consume her chance that was completely discovered in irritating statements of Vladimir Seks and Djurdjica Sumrak, hasn’t got any connection with the elections. When things among the HDZ members were the way Seks want them to be (as his prediction about he and her being elected for the president and the president deputy) and according to the way of Sumrak’s marketing plan (that wants to strengthen Kosor with brainwash and support extortion within the party organization), that would have been the impact over democracy, freedom and elections.
If Jadranka Kosor thinks she cannot win over the party presidential election if she has the opponents, then she shouldn’t even consider about running for the party president since there is no difference between a given and a stolen function. There is no real legitimacy for either. As first, there would have been no election and as second – elimination of the opponents before the battle means that the election was actually fingered. Then people might say the election is the political thievery at the first place as they don’t represent the freedom to decide.
Losing the election for each party means that there is time for changes. Even if the same person remains as the leader, it is necessary to ask for the new political content that will attract the voters. HDZ didn’t lose the election because of the Kukuriku coalition’s strength. The numbers have shown that Milanovic’s alliance won fewer votes than back in 2007 when the parties run for the elections separately. The HDZ party lost the election due to itself and its voters who have turned their back to HDZ just the way they did after Franjo Tudjman died in December 1999. That’s when those voters realized that eight years was enough as it was time for Croatia making purification from the thieves and starting to breathe. They didn’t vote for Ivica Racan but they provided his victory by not voting at the elections. So if Jadranka Kosor knew better or wanted so, she could have done it. She was the prime minister and HDZ boss. No one interrupted her activity. However, she didn’t know or wanted so, and you don’t know what is worst. After all, HDZ voters told her that eight years were enough and it was the time for changes. That was the truth Jadranka Kosor still doesn’t want to accept.
People who figure as ‘’good guys’’ in HDZ are the ones who loudly and clearly say that the party lost the elections. This notorious statement is actually a part of interparty differentiation between those who stand for and those who stand against Jadranka Kosor. Those who stand for her would say something like: ‘’OK, we didn’t win the elections but…’’ Those who stand against her don’t look for the alibies in the external circumstances as they would say: ‘’We are defeated, we should analyze why that had happened as we should take the responsibility…’’ Those who are against her don’t blame media about providing the victory for Kukuriku coalition since they know such thing is stupidity. Media were as the way they were and they didn’t make up the stories about the corruption and thievery during HDZ’s reign.
Although the state of people in Croatia is such like many people want HDZ along with Jadranka Kosor and Vladimir Seks to disappear from the face of the earth, but if we want the balance of the political scene, it is still important that the party recovers and transforms to a modern demo Christian party of moderate right wing orientation. This transformation isn’t possible the way it was imagined by Seks, the mentor and the friend Sumrak. But they actually don’t want a true transformation. Those two, for their own reasons, along with Jadranka Kosor as the key figures of that plan, want the existing condition to remain. But they obviously think this is impossible if they let people think, decide and vote truthfully.
But if Jadranka Kosor wins her own presidential mandate in an undemocratic way, there won’t only be twilight (Sumrak) but – a dark. And then those, who want the party to disappear since it devastated this country, might get what they want… Kosor, Seks, Sumrak (twilight), dark…
