ECOLOGY ASSOCIATIONS:
MARCH 22 2007 23:00h
Text
Ecological associations used the World Water Day to warn about the alarming situation in Croatia due to the decrease in water quality.
In cooperation with regional parties, the Primorje-Gorski Kotar Party (PGS), Slavonia-baranja Croatian party (SBHS) and Medjimurje Democratic Union (MDS), ecological associations told a press conference that the environment protection system in Croatia had fallen apart.
-- All four levels of the environment protection system are not functional – said Vjeran Pirsic, accentuating the latest ecological incident in Karlovac where the those competent did not react.
Although ecological associations stressed that they had no concrete data and research, but have “a strong feeling that data is being swept under the carpet”.
-- Citizens want to know the truth and are seeking protection. They have to be secure to send their child to school without a gas-mask – said Pirsic.
A representative of the Sisak ecological action, Danijel Pavlic, criticised three potential polluters – Ina, Termoelektrana and Herbos.
-- We are not against industrial production, but the killing of people should be prevented – Pavlic said, adding that Ina’s refinery had consciously poisoned the citizens of Sisak over the years.
The associations concluded that, in case of a lack of reaction from the Ecology Ministry and Agriculture Ministry, they would be forced to seek help outside of Croatia.
