Croatian leader to pay tribute to Partisan victims

Text

Croatia's president is to pay tribute to the victims of the post-World War II killings by Partisans in Austria and Slovenia, the first former Yugoslav republic leader to do so, his office said Friday.

On Sunday president Ivo Josipovic will visit Tezno in northeastern Slovenia and nearby Bleiburg in Austria, a statement from his his office said.

At the two sites Josipovic, who will be accompanied by representatives of Partisan anti-fascists veterans as well as the Serb and Roma community, is to lay wreaths for the victims "of the tragic events of 1945," it added.

As Josip Broz Tito's communists Partisans approached Zagreb in May 1945 Croatia's Nazi-allied Ustasha authorities and their collaborators started to flee towards Austria fearing revenge attacks.

The Ustasha, accompanied by civilians as well as Slovenian and Serbian collaborators with the regime, tried to escape and surrender to British forces.

The British, however, refused their surrender and they were caught and executed by the Partisans in the border region between Austria and Slovenia.

The number of those killed in the region of the southern Austrian town of Bleiburg remains controversial. Estimates vary from a few dozens to several tens of thousands.

Commemorations for the Bleiburg massacre victims, held every year in May, remain controversial due to use of Nazi symbols by Croat groups attending them.

None of Croatia's two previous presidents -- late Franjo Tudjman and Stipe Mesic- -- has ever visited the massacre site.

The Jutarnji List daily's online edition quoted sources from Josipovic's office saying Jospivoc planned the visit to help Croatia overcome the divisions of the past.

The move enables a "more decisive look towards future and possibility that this page (of history) be removed from politics," sources from the presidency said.

Croatia's Nazi-allied Ustasha regime persecuted and killed hundreds of thousands of ethnic Serb, Jews, Roman and anti-fascists Croatians.

You are a disgrace to every "True Croati
You are a disgrace to every Croatian who fought and died for our freedom. Your father jailed a true hero Frano Tudjman and now you further disgrace our people with your political visit to commenerate serbs and communists such as yourself Why don't you travel to Vukovar and raise our flag and express your disgrace for the murde rof our people? Why don't you deliever a speech in support of our hero Ante Gotovina and share with the world the horror our people suffered while you supported the serbs in the ruthless killing of our people. To watch our country disentigrate back into the hands of lefts communists like you and your father makes my murdered family members turn in their graves. It's too bad individuals like you wer not ethnic cleansed by your brothers so a true Croatian could turn our country around and lead it in the right direction. Your father was a communist and so are you, it's too bad the young people today don't know the real history of our country and the communist they voted to represent them in this changing world. I hope we have a revolution soon, so I can meet you in person and jail you and your serbian family memebers like you your family did to our recent hero's and allow true Croatians to hols you accountable for your pro-serbian actions.

Nazi Symbols??
Why don't you have the professionalism to write a detailed and succinct account of what it is that these "Croat groups attending" have used as "Nazi symbols"?

Your writings along with the majority of Croatia's so-called "free press" does nothing to keep readers informed but it perpetuates the Belgrade doctrine...stain everything Croatian as fascist and Nazi. Your OUTRAGEOUS and completely untenable accusation,

" Croatia's Nazi-allied Ustasha regime persecuted and killed hundreds of thousands of ethnic Serb, Jews, Roman and anti-fascists Croatians"......... is just another example.

Please read the official Holocaust Book of Rememberance and numerous post Yugoslavia era documents for an accurate recounting of this tragic era in Croatia's history.

Would that be too much to ask of a news agency to be informative, instead of just producing conjecture, inuendo and blatant lies? What a nice vague sweeping generalization to keep the Yugo-leftist propaganda alive and well.

Congratulations on perpetuating the mythology around Croatians forever tainted with your neo-communist position.
