European Journalism Conference In Zagreb

From the 23rd to 25th of March, in the press centre in Zagreb, the yearly conference of the European Federation of Journalists will be held.

Under the working name of “Promoting basic working rights for all journalists: Challenges of the digital era” from the 23rd to 25th of March, in the press centre in Zagreb, the yearly conference of the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) will be held.

The chief secretary of the European and International Federations (EFJ/IFJ), Aidan White, is in Seul on the margin of the conference of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) on the reconciliation and uniting of the two Koreas. At the conference, which was held last week, he stated that this is the largest and most important conference of European journalists and journalist agencies in 2007.

In Zagreb they will decide if the EFJ will propose a joint candidate for the presidency of the IFJ, of which the final decision will be made at the end of May at the world congress of the IFJ in Moscow.

White prepared a debate about the status of media freedom in Croatia.

After the ceremonial opening of the conference on the 23rd of March, two themed meetings are planned: “building quality in journalism” and “the future of work relations in European Medias”. The next day’s plan consists of a general meeting where EFJ workgroups will present their reports on worker’s rights, copyright, freelance journalists and journalists of electronic publications, and the status of media freedom in certain countries.

The acceptance of the program of EFJ activities for 2007-2010 is expected.

On the last day of the conference there will be elections for president of the main board of EFJ, and preparations for the IFJ in Moscow.

The Congress of the main board of the EFJ will hold their first conference outside of the European Union tomorrow. The President of the Republic of Croatia, Stjepan Mesic, supported the congress. Financial and other support was given to the organizers which were the Croatian Journalist’s Association (HND), and the Croatian Journalist’s Union (SNH). Support was given by the cabinet, Zagreb City Government, Croatian National Tourist Board, Zagreb City Tourist Board, Independent Union of Science and Higher Education and the parent body of Croatian unions, public and federal services.
