Although serving in the military was mandatory until now, soon conscripts will be able to suspend conscription.
Croatian Defence Minister Berislav Roncevic announced at today’s government session new adjustments of Croatian defence possibilities in the collective defence of NATO.
Voluntary serving for women too
-- Our drawing closer to Euro-Atlantic organisations gave rise to an increasing need for the Armed Forces to participate in international military exercises – Roncevic said.
The Defence Ministry also defined the serving of the military which will become voluntary, both for conscripts and for women, who are “in this way, able to gain the basic knowledge and skills of a soldier”.
Police, priests and religious officials will not serve
According to the Armed Forces’ long-term plan, it is envisaged that all people who have the basic military knowledge gained through voluntary serving in the military can become active soldiers.
-- Police officers, priests and religious officials of various religious communities are exempt from serving in the military – Roncevic said.
