After negotiations with the EU were given a green light, half of Croatian citizens gave their support to the pro-European policy.
Asked if they were to take a referendum tomorrow on Croatia’s accession into the European Union, 53 percent of Croatians said they would vote positively, which is a six percent increase from December 2005.
A third of the citizens voted against tying to Brussels, and those without an opinion fell from 19 to 14 percent.
Analysis believe that the pro-European attitude was caused by the recent election in Serbia because of mass reporting about the consequences of radical nationalism in the neighbouring country.
Others claim that the cause of heightened support to Croatia’s entering the EU is the fact that there have not been any conflicts lately concerning negotiations with the EU.
Interesting information is that the pro-European policy is mostly supported by voters of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) (63%),while there are 54 percent of voters of the Croatian People’s Party (HNS) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Vecernji list reports.
