Jasna Smiljanic who convicted Roncevic becomes a leader of USKOK department

Jasna Smiljanic, the judge of the County Court in Zagreb, is the new head of USKOK department of that court. Although her appointment has not become valid yet, she took up her new position on the first day of this year in accordance with the annual schedule of judges at the Zagreb County Court.

Judge Smiljanic used to be the assistant of the judge Ivan Turudic at the time when he was the president of USKOK department. She also led the first trial under the new Law of Criminal Procedure in the Truck Case.

In the proceedings, Berislav Rončevic, the former minister of defense, was conditionally sentenced to four and his assistant Ivo Bačić to two years of imprisonment. She also arbitrated corrupt professors, students and mediators of the Faculty of Traffic and Transport Sciences in the Index 1 case. Although she had 16 accused, she managed to complete the trial within only three months.

She also convicted the runaway judge Zvonimir Josipović as well as a group of smugglers of weapons led by Stjepan Rocek. A judge Renata Milicevic has been appointed as judge Smiljanić’s deputy. This year she will, among other cases, have to arbitrate in the case of a group of accused for the robbery of the Financial Agency (FINA) in September 2005 when two security guards of Sokol Marić were murdered.

According to a new schedule a judge Ivana Krsul has become a deputy of PR of the Court. The new organization also appointed the part of trial judges and investigation judges to their new positions in Sentence Department of the second degree.
