Let The Generals Keep Their Medals

Text

The Association of Defenders, Disabled and Widows of the Homeland War is embittered by the initiative to take away the generals' medals.

The association of the Zagreb defenders of Vukovar started the initiative to take away the medals from retired generals Branimir Glavas and Vladimir Zagorec because of their show of “contempt toward the Croatian legal system.” As the Association of Defenders, Disabled and Widows of the Homeland War (UBIUDR) said in a statement released today, neither of the aforementioned generals has been sentenced yet and, since the court proceedings have only begun, the Association thinks that the initiative is a form of pressure on the court to sentence those generals.

Hunger is not contempt

UBIUDR is wondering what would happen if the generals were stripped off their medals and later acquitted by the court. They are also wondering how those who suggested the initiative had come to the conclusion that Branimir Glavas was showing contempt and disrespect of Croatia’s legal system by going on a hunger strike. The association of the Zagreb defenders of Vukovar announced at a press conference yesterday that they had started an initiative to take away the medals from the retired generals Glavas and Zagorec because of, as they said, “a show of contempt toward the Croatian legal system.” Vladimir Zagorec showed contempt and disrespect to the Croatian legal system by failing to appear at a scheduled hearing and Branimir Glavas did it by going on a hunger strike, concluded the president of the association of the Zagreb defenders of Vukovar Damir Jasarevic.
