LETTER TO SECURITY COUNCIL

JANUARY 27 2010 15:13h

Mesic warns about Dodik’s radicalism?

Text

Mesic’s words are a warning that the world should not turn a blind eye to the politics of Republika Srpska’s PM, says the letter.

In a letter submitted to the Chairman of the UN Security Council on Monday Croatia expressed regret that the Serbian president used the discussion of the UNMIK mission in Kosovo for the “unfounded” response to the informal remark the Croatian president made about the possible consequences of the disintegration of Bosnia.

Letter sent from the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Croatia to the UN in New York was handed to Zhang Yesuiu, Official Chinese Representative and January chair of the UN Security Council, to be divided among members of the UN Security Council and all UN members as a document of the Security Council.

Letter signed by the Deputy of the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Croatia to the UN, Nevena Mikec, states that Croatian authorities wish to warn that on January 22 during discussion of UN’s Security Council the Serbian President Boris Tadic gave “unfounded” response to the informal remark the Croatian president Stjepan Mesic made during a New Year's reception for the media”.

The letter points out that Mesic talked informally to a group of journalists and that his remarks were made in conditional terms. That is, he was speculating about something that could happen in the event of another event – what would happen if “Republika Srpska  separated from the independent and internationally recognized Bosnia and Herzegovina and annexed into the Republic of Serbia''.

Mesic’s words are radically formulated warning that the world should not turn a blind eye to Dodik’s politics

Letter further reiterates formulation from earlier reports made by the President's Office, which is that Mesic’s words should be taken as a “radically formulated warning that the world should not turn a blind eye to the politics of RS Prime Minister Milorad Dodik and the possible consequences of such a policy; blind eye tactic was used for the politics of Slobodan Milosevic, who led the disintegration of former Yugoslavia in a bloody war''.

It also adds that President Mesic wants to clarify that the “collapse of neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina is absolutely unacceptable for Croatia”.

The letter points out that the Croatian president's continued effort significantly contributed to stabilization and normalization of relations in the region, but how these efforts were recently met with certain resistance.  In spite of this, Croatian president is accused of threatening security in Southeastern Europe.

The conclusion emphasizes that such “unwarranted and unacceptable” response will not distract Croatia from promoting good neighborly relations with all the neighbors in the region.

During last Friday’s address to the UN Security Council on UNMIK’s mission to Kosovo, Tadic strongly condemned Mesic’s informal remark that Croatia would send its army in the event that the Republika Srpska organizes a referendum on separation from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Tadic rated this as “dangerous” and “hatemongering”.
