No need for Croats to do the fertilization abroad

Text

Human reproduction experts say that there is no need for patients to go abroad because new methods of fertilization are already here.

Croatian society for human reproduction will spend the next six months obesrving the Ministry of Health’s fertilization laws and do the analysis of their own procedures. The purpose of this process is to compare the results and use the findings for future law amendments.

Experts in human reproduction, who met during the weekend to discuss the law, rejected all unscientifically based claims that the new law will increase failure rates. They once again, emphasized that there was no realistic need for patients to use fertilization centers abroad.

The document signed by the President of the Croatian Society for Human reproduction, professor Velimir Simunic, said that, thanks to the Ministry of Health’s equipment investment and additional training of specialists, the best fertilization method was at last adopted.

They point out that 97 percent of the children were conceived through methods of fresh embryotransfer, while only 4 to 5 percent were born from frozen embryos. They also add that methods of freezing eggs have significantly advanced in recent years.

Mild therapeutic protocols

Results have shown that survival rates of frozen egg cells in younger women are 90 percent; the insemination success rate is 75 percent and, ultimately, 30 to 40 percent of cases end with pregnancy.

Medical profession is committed to mild treatment protocols to prevent multiple pregnancies and it is estimated that in such circumstances, 60 percent of patients should have 2 to 5 eggs available for freezing.

In order to decrease its current waiting rates from one year to six months, Croatia needs ten or so human reproduction centers and it needs to allow more procedures.

Therefore, they have obtained a transitional period of 3 to 6 months to prepare for the new IVF centers, to obtain licenses, analyze current results, and determine the capacity of the centers as well as their staff's expertese.
