`I can confirm that Jelavic is in Zagreb under police custody,` police official Krunoslav Borovec told state radio.

A former Bosnian Croat leader, who was sentenced in abstentia for embezzlement in Bosnia, is now in police custody after disappearing in Croatia, police said on Thursday.

Ante Jelavic, a former member of Bosnia's tripartite presidency, fled to Croatia four years ago to escape jail back home.

His family reported he had gone missing on Wednesday afternoon and local media said kidnappers were holding him.

"I can confirm that Jelavic is in Zagreb under police custody and we're currently investigating the circumstances of his disappearance," police official Krunoslav Borovec told state radio.

Jelavic, who has both Croatian and Bosnian citizenship, was convicted and sentenced to 10 years for abuse of office and embezzlement of government funds in Bosnia.
