ZAGREB, CROATIA -
- I cannot believe this used to be my room – Maja Vuzmek told us, a girl whose ceiling collapsed on Monday morning in her bedroom, downtown Zagreb.
The young economist lives alone and was fortunate enough to have fallen asleep in the living room, thus avoiding tragedy.
- I celebrate my second birthday today – the still excited 25-year-old told us.
According to the estimate of the City Residential City Municipal Management, 900 kilos of ceiling collapsed.
- I heard a big bang at 5.30 a.m., ran to the bedroom and there was dust everywhere. The plaster was on the floor. All furniture was destroyed in the room – surprised Maja told us, adding:
- I do not see any of authoritive people making an effort regarding this case. Nobody wants to claim blame. I suppose I should have died in order for the authoritive persons to wake up.
The building in Sirolina Street was constructed in the 1960s and the City Residential City Municipal Management unofficially states that construction is what caused the accident. In just four years, five buildings with underground garages were constructed in this street. The City Residential City Municipal Management will start fixing the damage this week.
- This is a re-run of Kupska Street, I though this could never happen to me. I am astonished, but I`m not panicking. I am worried that this could also happen to my neighbours. Fixing things is not the solution, because nobody can guarantee that my kitchen will not collapse tomorrow – Maja said, adding that she would be sleeping in the living room.
