PhotoAt noon exactly, ten lesbian and gay couples exchanged rings and kisses in the centre of Zagreb, shocking unsuspecting passers-by.
ZAGREB, CROATIA – Downtown Zagreb today was unusually busy with various events, from birthday concerts, to student protests and performances on Ban Jelacic Square. But most attraction was drawn by a group of ten gay couples who kneeled down in front of their partners exactly at noon, offering them rings, after which long kissing followed.
This was the first Croatian Flashmob Wedding organised by the Zagreb Pride association on
‘Provoking snobs’
Flashmob is a term used for a group of people who gather in a public place and do something unusual, after which they quickly disperse. The primary goal was to provoke snobs and consumer trend addicts, which has gained a much wider dimension when organisations of minority social groups accepted such acts of demonstration.
- I felt very brave and happy. I finally publicly kissed my girlfriend and freely expressed myself – Jelena, 24, said after her first Flashmob.
- It was a bit provocative, but I am convinced that exchanging kisses and affection between same-sex couples in public will soon become a part of everyday life in Zagreb – Jelena said.
- It was exciting, hot and important for gay people in Zagreb and Croatia to be seen and empowered. I would like it if all gay people in Croatia would do the same: kiss their boyfriend in public – 20-year-old Tomislav said.
