The ritual burning of the price of the carnival wipes away all evil and a better year awaits us. This ended the 183rd Samobor carnival.

SAMOBOR, CROATIA - The streets of the city of Samobor, on the last day of the “Fasnik” (carnival), was filled by hundreds of people in fancy dress impatiently waiting for the big finale, the burning of the price of the carnival.

The streets were filled with the smell of boiled wine, fritters and barbeques, and the visitors gave in to the happy and social satire.

Amongst the masked people were small ninja turtles, fairies, pirates, prisoners, lady beetles, bees, vampires, angels and devils, to police officers and the current Slovenians. The city was filled with characters from fairy tales and national stories.

People started having fun, and joined in the happiness from the afternoon hours. Before the main event, the trial and the ritual burning of the prince of the carnival, there was a competition to choose the best mask.

All of those gathered came to watch the trial of the prince of the carnival, who with his sacrifice will drive away all evil from the world and bring prosperity. The prince of the carnival will be tried for his as well as everyone else’s misdeeds, and will be publicly burned for the wellbeing of all of Croatia’s citizens.

The trial itself was intense, the gathered spectators chanted to burn the judge, and not the price of the carnival. However their request was not heard and the price was taken accompanies by guards, and was ritually burned.

Whilst the prince disappeared in the ritualistic flames, the sky above Samobor was covered in fireworks that officially closed the 183rd Samobor carnival. However, the fun did not stop then. The singer Jole performed in a large tent and entertained the happy crowd until long into the night.
