ZAGREB, CROATIA – It has been nearly a year since the Croatian government introduced healthy diet menus in schools, but the pupils have not yet adjusted to these meals. They want nonhealthy, salty and sweet dishes and drinks!
Talking with primary school pupils in front of the Juraj Strossmayer school in Zagreb, we were taken aback with what their initial response was:
- Horrible! Yuck! Disgusting! –
- What is the worst? – we wondered
- Absolutely everything – was the most common answer.
- Cornflakes, cereals, cheese cream with carrots, old unsavoury bread… -
Domagoj Andrilic said fruit and bread with jam was “OK”, but nothing else was tasty.
- I`d like more tangerines and oranges, but also that they give us donuts and pizza at least from time to time. I know my mum says its healthy, but what can I do when its tasty – Domagoj said.
Pizza and donuts followed by Cao-Cao chocolate dessert, French fries and sodas like Cedevita.
- We only got donuts for Halloween. I`d like some leafy cheese pies, salt-covered bagels and grilled minced meat. And no more of that old brown bread – Tin Penezic complained.
These reactions for pupils have been the same, even when the menus were introduced. The government dismissed criticism, claiming it took some time for the pupils to get used to new, healthy flavours, but from our poll, it seems this is not likely to happen.
You can see the pupils responses in the attached photo gallery.
