BIG STUDENTS’ RALLY
APRIL 25 2009 14:15h
I hope the students will not back down at the first nice word, but that they will demand serious talks, women’s activist Sanja Sarnavka said
ZAGREB, CROATIA - - When the faculties of philosophy, economy and law agree on something, then you know the situation is serious. We have given Education Minister Dragan Primorac enough time to get his bearings and now it is up to him to begin acting – said a student in front of Zagreb’s Faculty of Philosophy at which students have blocked classes for the third week now, demanding free education for all students.
The students of the faculties of law and economy marched to the Faculty of Philosophy to show their support to the great student protest.
- I am truly proud that our initiative has spread across the country. We also agreed to put up a video we are filming ourselves on YouTube because that is the only medium that is currently not subject to censorship. Some media, like the national radio and television (HRT) broadcast our statements out of context the entire time, so we decided to do this – one of the students who took part in organising the protest said.
The students confirmed the blockade of the faculty will continue indefinitely and that an on-line petition will be started with the Diaspora being able to take part in it.
This country is ruled by fear, insecurity and mistrust
Nearby, we met Sanja Sarnavka, coordinator of the B.a.b.e. women’s association, who said she came as a private person to support the students because she hopes that at least they will be able to start something in this country given that everything else is rotten.
- We heard yesterday that the minister is furious because he cannot take his reputation being slurred. I hope that the students will not give in at the first nice word, but that they will demand serious talks – Sarnavka said and added that the deans who are supporting the students could get fired. She stressed that the voice of the public is important here, that is, how the people would react to the possible sanctions.
- This country is ruled by fear, insecurity and mistrust. If I were in my student days, I would lead the protests because I was always rebellious. Still, I don’t envy them because they live in ugly and tough times – Sarnavka told Javno.
