ZAGREB, CROAITA – Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said Croatia will become a safe country, regardless of the fact if the reason for the murder of the NCL Media Group co-owner Ivo Pukanic is a mafia showdown or terrorism.
- We discussed implementing emergency rule as well as implementing a similar operation like “Sabre” was in another country, but instead, we will implement emergency measures of all responsible institutions – Sanader said at the Croatian Parliament after a sitting of the Croatian National Security Council (VONS).
- Nobody from the crime scene will sleep at night after this – Sanader said.
President`s office with the MUP, DORH and SOA
Sanader claims that the Council has reached a number of conclusions. Co-ordination between the
Interior Ministry (MUP), Justice Ministry, Police Directorate, the Croatian Intelligence Agency (SOA) and the State Attorney`s Office (DORH) has been stressed. The news is that the President`s Office will co-operate with them, i.e. President Mesic`s advisor for national security.
- Police Directorate will submit weekly reports to the PM and the president on the moves they take – Sanader named one of the conclusions from the VONS sitting.
The National Security Council will meet once a month to discuss one item exclusively, fight against crime and mafia.
The PM pointed out that no police officer can be taken as an exception in the Pukanic case investigation, as the perpetrator or the person who ordered it.
Rulebook on prisoners` benefits
- All investigations must be exceptionally transparent, honouring the need for certain information not to be published at the same time – Sanader said.
The prime minister appealed to the Justice Ministry for the alterations to the Law on police authorisations and the Penal Code to be finalised as soon as possible. Additionally, Sanader criticised justice that there are 1,301 indictments for organised crime in courts, which should be dealt with as soon as possible.

Head of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Zoran Milanovic was among the first to display unity, saying “powerful will and arrogance is necessary to put an end to organised crime”.
- Churchill said that everyone has their day, but someone`s lasts longer. I hope this black day will last as short as possible, like the winter solstice, and that other days are like a long, hot summer – Milanovic said.
Head of the SDP reiterated that the state of this country has not been threatened, but the feeling that “Dubrava is equally safe as downtown Zagreb, and Crnomerec like Precko”.
Pusic forwarded a message to Bajic
