Preserving the Biodiversity in Zagreb

Zagreb has become a part of EU campaign, and decision was brought on landscaping and preservation of Savica, Jarun and Maksimir

The City of Zagreb has recently become part of the EU campaign on preventing the loss of biodiversity in cities, which is a part of Countdown 2010 global intiative, launched by the European Centre for Nature Conservation, they tell us in Zagreb Tourist Association.

As a part of this project, a decision was passed on landscaping and preservation of the protected area of Savica, the Jarun Lake and Maksimir Park.

The City Government action has already begun by landscaping the lake in Savica-Sanci, which is part of the protected Savica landscape. Lanscaping of the lake of Maksimir, and the Jarun sports and recreation centre is another step in this campaign.

The goal f this project is raising the consciousness of the value and the richness of biodiversiy in urban areas in whole Europe and it will allow involvement of citizens who are interested to volunteer in the protection of biodiversity of localities of City's natural heritage.

Couple of institutions for now participate on this project: Botanical Institute of Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, Ornitology Institute of Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences, Croatian Natural Sceience Museum and City Institute for Landscape Planning.
