Prosecution Wants Severe Punishment For Zagorec

Text

The County State Attorney`s Office has filed an appeal over the court`s provision against retired Croatian general Vladimir Zagorec.

ZAGREB, CROATIA - Zagreb Prosecution has filed an appeal against the invalid verdict to retired Croatian general Vladimir Zagorec (46) and requested the Supreme Court to increase the seven-year prison sentence to the former assistant to Croatian defence minister.

Apart from the prison sentence, the court also adopted the Prosecution`s request for property in the amount of 5 million U.S. dollars to be seized from Zagorec, which is the value of the stolen jewels.

The Zagreb County State Attorney`s Office has filed an appeal over the court`s provision, believing that Zagorec`s sentence should have been longer and without conditions, a brief notice regarding the appeal reads. Zagreb County Court sentenced the Croatian general, who received most medals for his services, to seven years in prison for abusing his position and authority because he took a duffle bag containing jewels from the Ministry of Defence safe upon leaving his position in 2000. The prosecution announced an appeal straight after the verdict, believing that the sentenced was too lenient, while the defence said that the verdict was reached without any evidence.

It is expected that Vladimir Zagorec`s attorney will soon file an appeal.
