Vesna Pusic has accepted the party candidature for president of Croatia at the upcoming presidential elections.
ZAGREB, CROATIA - The vice-president of the Croatian People’s Party (HNS) – Liberal Democrats (LS) and the president of the national committee for monitoring the negotiations with the EU, Vesna Pusic, accepted to be the party candidate for the upcoming presidential elections in Croatia.
The president of the party, Radimir Cacic, supported her as the presidential candidate for HNS at the elections. He said that Vesna Pusic is the best Croatia can offer for that honourable and responsible duty.
At the presentation in front of the Croatian Visual Arts building (Mestrovic’s Pavilion) at the Victims of Fascism Square, where the closest party leaders gathered, Pusic stressed that the most important presidential duties are advocating for the existence of the citizens and human rights for every person.
She will work towards Croatia getting the right place in the region and being a good neighbour which should be followed, and to set Croatia as a nation whose influence in the European Union surpasses its size.
“The international reputation of Vesna Pusic in the field and politics is without competition, and above all, her flat stance, clean and honest, is a guarantee that she will be the strongest point which everyone who needs to raise the country out of the dirt can lean on” said Cacic. He added that the time of an economic crisis and other crises seeks serious and capable people.
Mesic knew about Vesna Pusic’s candidature
He said that at an internal party poll, he achieved a rating which was one tenth better than Vesna Pusic, and that according to the citizens, who gave 17% support to HNS, both can take the serious responsibility and great task of leading the nation.
When asked why he did not accept the presidential candidature, considering the slightly higher party rating, Cacic answered that neither he or Vesna Pusic are in politics for themselves, but to offer the best solution, and that their chances are equal, with the fact that he had an opportunity to decide upon the candidature considering his formal advantage.
When asked why the opposition did not go with a joint candidate according to a recent agreement, Cacic answered that this question has been directed at the wrong address, stating that he publically called SDP (Social Democratic Party) to give a joint candidate, which IDS (Istrian Democratic Parliament) also accepted, but SDP refused to talk about it, considering that they must give their own presidential candidate.
When asked if she will gain support from the current president of Croatia, Stjepan Mesic, Pusic said that Mesic knew about her candidature and that their agreement on politics stands, but whilst he is head of the country, he will probably keep a distant stance on that.
Journalists were also interested why HNS chose the Victims of Fascism Square as a place to present their presidential candidate. Pusic answered that it is close to the HNS headquarters, and her house, but she added that the square has a nice and honourable name.
