ROMA CHILDREN COMPLAINTS

Text
Constitutional court discussed requests of Roma children in Medjimurje which demanded special classes to be canceled.
Court ruling was that the formation of special classes for the Roma first-graders in Medjimurje primary schools is not unconstitutional and that these classes do not represent any segregation or discrimination.
It was also said this kind of practice in higher grades is unacceptable.
Namely, 14 Roma children sued four Medjimurje schools and the Ministry of Education and Sports because they had to attend special classes in 2001.
The constitutional court expressed its position that it is unacceptable to keep the Roma children in special classes after they have learned the Croatian language.
“There is no objective and reasonable justification not to include a Roma pupil who learns the language in regular classes”, the judges said.
