We can win next year! We can take Zagreb back! – This is what the candidates of HDZ announced, being very shy in the beginning and talking only to their party members. But, as the race for the president of Zagreb HDZ went on, they became more and more courageous and their optimism infected all members of the party.
Today each and every member of HDZ in Zagreb believes in something that seemed an impossible mission several months ago. They believe that Zagreb won’t be the fortress of SDP any more.
Although they have been the subject of all bad news by Croatian media, the members of Zagreb HDZ believe that the situation will change in the next year. In their internal elections in local branches and committees the winners were mostly new faces who are not known in wider public. The majority of them are in their thirties or forties who have proved themselves in their private area.
They have been the members of HDZ for years but haven’t played any active roles because they realized they could have been promoted only if they had been Ivo Sanader’s or JadrankaKosor’s friends. When this condition ruling the Zagreb votes disappeared, they finally get some space to become active. And they are active indeed. The election results motivated the others. The lawyer StjepanVokic, the son of the ex-minister of education LjiljaVokic is the best example for this trend.
At first he observed the election race without any interest and then, carried by the results of some new people, he himself decided to candidate. He was a candidate for one of 39 places in the City Board of HDZ.
- Have you seen this Gasparic person in Tresnjevka? The guy is a successful scientist and he is not related to anyone, and he won. We can create miracles with such people and they haven’t had a chance so far. When I saw such people winning, I realized that the party has woken up at last and that I cannot sit at the side anymore. Now I don’t only suppose that we can win, I am aware of that. We will take Zagreb over – Stipe Vokic is convinced. He has been a pessimist so far. But things can obviously change.
