ZAGREB, CROATIA – Zagreb’s neighbourhood of Cvjetno naselje was in shock on Friday night after they learnt that a sixteen-year-old girl from there had tried to commit suicide by jumping off the seventh floor of a building. At the moment the teenager threw herself off the building, a student, Jako Brnic, and a friend were passing along the street.
Jako was returning home from university when he and his friend saw something fall off a building. At first they though it was a bunch of clothes, only to find out a second later that it was a girl.
I came up to her, checked if she was breathing and tried to find a pulse. She had no pulse, so I moved her tongue so she would not choke on it and started giving her a heart massage and she began breathing.
- I was going home from school and for no reason I looked up at the building. I suddenly saw something falling, I thought it was clothes or some junk, but when it hit the ground, I realised it wasn’t clothes, but a girl – the 20-year-old Jako Brnic told us.
As soon as he realised a girl had fallen off the building, he told his friend to call for an ambulance. As he spoke to us, Jako tried to describe the events of after 8pm as precisely as possible.
The young student seemed exceptionally calm after he had done practically everything to save another human life. But his voice did tremble a little, as if he himself could not even understand what happened and how much courage he had shown at the crucial time.
He was not thinking, yet he did everything he could to save a human life
When he ran up to the girl, Jako continued his story, he did not think much, but tried to save her life.
- I came up to her, checked if she was breathing and tried to find a pulse. She had no pulse, so I moved her tongue so she would not choke on it and started giving her a heart massage and she began breathing – Jako told us.
After he managed to resuscitate her and the girl was breathing independently, he stayed with her until the ambulance vehicle arrived.
Asked how he managed to react so quickly and well, check her calmly and begin resuscitation, the humble Jako could not explain. He simply and spontaneously did everything to help for girl.
Unfortunately, as we learned from the hospital where the girl was taken, despite the hours of efforts of the doctors to save her life, the girl died during the night.
It is still unknown why the girl wanted to take her own life and police are still investigating the case.
What we do know is that Jako Brnic is a young hero who bravely and without much thought, took the responsibility and tried to help the young woman who was lying on the pavement lifelessly.
Because of his courage and selflessness, the girl stayed alive until the arrival of the ambulance.
