Text

Three judges have been named investigative judges for 27 suspects arrested in the Zagreb corruption scandal.

ZAGREB, CROATIA – The suspects arrested for corruption at the Zagreb University who were remanded in custody after apprehension will be questioned at the Zagreb County Court today.

The suspects will be transported from their holding cells to the court at around 1pm today, so they should all be processed by the judges by the afternoon, the court’s spokesman, Kresimir Devcic, said.

Because of the large number of suspects, 27 of them, three investigative judges have been appointed to hold the hearings.

- The suspects will cite their defence before the investigative judges and a decision on an investigation should be made – Devcic said.

After the “Index” operation, the Office for the Prevention of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK) submitted to the Zagreb County Court requests for investigation against 69 suspects – 22 connected to the Faculty of Economy and 47 to the Faculty of Transport. Three investigative requests were submitted based on which three court files were drawn up.

Detention was ordered for suspects accused of a number of criminal acts and those who were thought to be able to influence witnesses.
