The archeological site Kamenica presented in Zagreb

A stone found at the excavated remains of a church from the Byzantine period, built inside a large public compound from the Second Temple period, in Horbat Midras, Israel, February 2, 2011. Recently, after illicit excavations by antiquities robbers, the Israel Antiquities Authority Unit for the Prevention of Antiquities Robbery, carried out an excavation at the site. The excavations revealed an impressive mosaic floor and a church. Scholars who have visited the site proposed identifying the place as the residence and tomb of the prophet Zechariah. The presentation of the Early Christianity Complex Kamenica in Vinkovci was held today in the Museum of Arts and Craft.

- The modern archeological methods enabled us to locate precisely the remains of the Early Christianity Complex from the 4th and 5th century. There are the walls of the big church with other facilities. The whole complex is surrounded by the massive wall and there are remains of the numerous tombs all around. The whole complex is one acre big and the church with the churchyard is more than 4000 square meters large. The dimension of the church is 34 times 15 meters and the diameter of the baptizing well is 7.5 meters. All these remains prove that there was a diocese in Ancient Cibaliae which was one of the centers of Panoniae secundae. The real meaning couldn’t have been evaluated prior to this discovery. The first remains include a very rich Early Christianity object with marble coverings. The size and the organization show that this could have been a very important public place. Therefore, this discovery is sensational in a sense because there hasn’t been any similar site in continental part of Croatia – said Zoran Wiewegh who is a person in charge of conservation.

The presentation of the discovery and the archeological methods was held by Zlatko Uzelac, the Minister of Culture assistant, Goran Skelac, the leader of geophysical research and the archeologist from Vinkovci Hrvoje Vulic, who is the leader of the research project.
