Alkars from Sinj, carnival bell ringers from Kastav, lacemaking from Pag and Lepoglava are only a few things out of twelve Croatian intangible heritage items from UNESCO World Heritage list.
The First Place in Europe
Croatia has the greatest number of such items in Europe. All these twelve items will be presented at one place as a part of a project called Materina prica (Mother’s story): “All together – the best of Croatia”. This is the first such event ever.
There will be more than 200 keepers of Croatian customs and culture participating in the event. This unique venture created by Aleksandar Kovacevic will be completed in the summer of the year 2013, the year of entering the EU. Zagreb will host the experts of ojkavica singing, mute kolo dancing, becarac music, Festival of Saint Blaise, wooden toys manufacturing and spring procession from Gorjani. As the introduction to the whole story there will be a fashion performance at Zagreb Fair where all the participant of the project will be presented.
- For the first time the whole Croatian intangible heritage will be presented at one place. The members of the famous procession from Hvar, the players and singers of two-part Istrian scale and craftsmen from Zagorje will be there as well – Kovacevic explained the concept.
- Cultural tourism is a world trend. Almost 20 percent of tourists choose the destinations according to the cultural heritage of the place. This project has been inspired by this idea.
- Croatia has to take part in the international scene. The tourism today is the tourism of experiences and we have about a thousand of different events – Kovacevic added. Together with customs and traditions, one part of the project is also a fashion show. The well-known designer Mina Petra Petricec will show her collection. – The models will be former Croatian representatives at world beauty contests. They will wear clothes inspired by traditional elements like licitar souvenirs, lace from Lepoglava and Pag and Alka from Sinj – the designer announced.
