The Union of cyclists held the demonstration on the Earth's Day

The Union of cyclists held the third event called “I choose the Earth, I cycle”. The event was held last weekend and it was a part of the Earth’s Day celebration.

“We came out into the streets to show that we want a city which is not occupied by cars. We want a city where the attention is paid to the ecological ways of transport. We want a city where cyclists and pedestrians live without the artificial disputes caused by irregular and insufficient cycling lanes” said Iva Kvakic from the Union of cyclists.

The cyclists chose a route from FrancuskaRepublika Square to Bundek because they wanted to show symbolically what Zagreb should look like in the future. They were aiming at the city institutions in charge such as the City Office for Strategy Planning and the City Office for Transport.

“We want the employees of the City Office for Strategy Planning to walk (or cycle) to the City Office for Transport and hand them international Presto guidelines. These were already ordered and paid for. Maybe they would realize that the quality cycling infrastructure is much more than yellow lines. The solution for the traffic problems in the city is the system of planning and giving the public areas back to pedestrians and cyclists. There is no city in the world which solved the problem of traffic jams by building car parks. On the contrary, they solved the problem by building for all others: public transport, bicycles and pedestrians” they say from the Union of cyclists.

There were more than a thousand cyclists who took part in the action. (Mediaservis)
