The president of the biggest Opposition party - the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) - Tomislav Karamarko, said in the northern Croatian town of Cakovec on Wednesday that the case of former Environment Minister Mirela Holy was the issue of nepotism and jockeying for positions.

He said the case was now entering the phase of scheming, when it is trying to be established who read emails and why. By doing so, (the government) is trying to avoid entering the merit of the problem, namely the issue of jockeying for positions, Karamarko said, adding that this was the main characteristic of this government.

Holy resigned last week as Croatia's environment minister over an email in which she asked the head of the state railway company to keep the wife of a party colleague in her job, becoming the second cabinet minister to leave Croatia's young government.

Environment Minister Mirela Holy said she was stepping down over the "political damage" caused by the release of the email she sent in March to the head of state railway company HZ, Rene Valcic.
