Sisak prison warden Ivica Dadovic was suspended over disobeying prison rules, i.e. sexually harassing female inmates.
Additional investigations of prisons in Split, Sisak, Zagreb and the Zagreb prison hospital were announced. Minister Simonovic proclaimed the penal system would be combed over in 2009, and 30 percent new wardens would be appointed. The government will start implementing this improved programme in January.
- We are planning to secure better accommodation conditions in prisons, greater labour and studying options, a wider range or probation, i.e. reducing sentences by replacing them with monitored community service – Simonovic said, adding that the Gina prison should be expanded by spring 2010, which would attain 400 new spots.
