Zagreb’s Homeless – Everyday Image in the City

Text

One of the permanent tenants of Ban Jelacic Square found solace in his poverty in front of the Mala kavana café in Zagreb.

ZAGREB, CROATIA – With all the tragedies that are happening in the streets of Zagreb, the everyday image of the Ban Jelacic Square and wider, speaks more than words. Poverty is increasing and citizens who were left without a roof over their heads through circumstance are doing the best they can.

One of the permanent ‘tenants’ of Zagreb’s squares, parks and benches, decided to take a nap in front of the Mala kavana café in Zagreb’s main square. Although most citizens did not let the smell and terrible fate of the elderly gentleman disrupt their routine in drinking coffee and getting some sun, some of them shot horrified glances at him and avoided him in a wide circle.

The reason for this is that most homeless people fall even deeper and find solace in alcohol, which pushes them even further from any possibility of a better life. Dirty and drunk, one of them found comfort in Zagreb’s main square, living his destiny as he knows best. A sad reality.
