* Tensions flared in the Middle East, raising fears about global security and lifting the price of oil more than 6 percent.
* The Dow Jones industrial average slipped 32.10 points, or 0.38 percent, at 8,483.45. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index dropped 3.48 points, or 0.40 percent, at 869.32. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 19.92 points, or 1.30 percent, at 1,510.32.
