Darling told Reuters: `Obviously if you have 20 people sitting round a table, there will be differences`.

There will always be differences at international meetings but there is common ground at this weekend's G20 talks that countries need to take action to fight the economic crisis, British Finance Minister Alistair Darling said on Friday.

Asked about French and German opposition to U.S. calls for more fiscal stimulus to battle a global downturn, Darling told Reuters: "Obviously if you have 20 people sitting round a table, there will be differences."

"I think there is a lot of common ground. If you take fiscal stimulus, for example, the U.S. has, we have, the French have, the Germans have," he said.

He added that what was important for the meeting -- being hosted by Britain through Saturday -- was that all countries knew they had to take action.
