Turkmenistan's Maritime and River Transport Service plans to sign a contract with the Croatian shipyard Uljanik for the construction of two passenger car ferries, Turkmen media quoted an official Turkmen source as saying on Saturday.
Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed a decree to implement the transport and communication development programme for the 2012-2016 period and the general development plan for the Caspian Sea port of Turkmenbashi and the national merchant marine fleet until 2020.
The contract was the result of a recent working visit to Croatia by a Turkmen government delegation, when they visited the Uljanik shipyard in Pula, media said.
The Turkmen merchant marine fleet currently consists of nine vessels: four cargo ships with a total capacity of 13,000 tons and five "river-sea" tankers with a total capacity of 23,600 tons. (Hina)
