ARLINGTON, Va., Jan. 6 (UPI) -- A project to improve energy use and reduce energy costs at National Guard armories in Virginia is to be implemented by Pepco Energy Services.

The target of the Virginia Department of Military Affairs project is to reduce consumption of energy at the facilities by 15 percent each year over a 15-year period and save more than $15 million in energy costs over the life of the contract.

Pepco said 58 facilities in Virginia will be involved.

"Pepco Energy is pleased to work with the Virginia Department of Military Affairs in improving the energy efficiency of its armories across the state," said John Huffman, president and chief executive officer of Pepco Energy.

"This project demonstrates the National Guard's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and its environmental stewardship to the greater community.

"This award shows that Pepco Energy is dedicated to helping the U.S. military achieve its energy goals."

The performance contract is worth $11 million. Under the 15-year contract, Pepco will institute measures to reduce water consumption at the armories, install digital energy controls, more efficient boilers and geothermal systems. It will also conduct infrastructure improvements on facilities as needed to aid in energy conservation.
